The honest part

You don't know how to help your own child.

Maybe they're shy. Maybe they're getting pushed around and you can't be there every second. The part that keeps you up is not knowing how to fix it.

Safety, before anything else

How contact is handled, by age.

Your child is never going to get kicked in the head here. That's not what this is. Contact is introduced slowly, age-appropriately, and always with the parent's full understanding of what's happening. Here's exactly how it works.

Ages 5 to 7

No contact

Stance, balance, and how to fall safely. No hitting and no grappling pressure at this age.

Ages 8 to 10

Light, controlled touch

Pad work and light, supervised partner drills in full gear. Contact is optional and never a surprise.

Ages 11 to 14

Optional technical sparring

Older kids can opt into supervised technical sparring. Never hard, never required, and always the child's choice.

What your child actually gains.

Confidence that isn't loud

Your kid learns they can do hard things. That shows up at school long before it shows up on a mat.

Real self-defense, not theater

How to stay on their feet, create space, and get out of a bad situation.

Discipline that sticks

The habit of showing up, listening, and finishing what you start.

Why trust this

You're handing your child to a stranger and hoping they come out better. I don't take that lightly and you shouldn't either.

I'm an active professional fighter, 6-0, so what your child learns is real and current rather than something I read about.

I'm NASM certified, and I build a child's training around joints, growth and recovery.

You stay for the whole trial class. Nothing happens behind a closed door.

How it works

Three steps. That's the whole thing.

03

Your kid decides whether they want to come back

If they had fun and you liked what you saw, we'll talk. If not, that's fine too.

Martial arts for kids in Columbus, taught the right way

If you've been looking into martial arts for kids in Columbus, OH, you already know the worry that comes with it. You want your child to grow up confident, disciplined, and able to stand up for themselves, but you don't want them in a program that's careless about safety, and you don't want them taught by someone who treats children like mini adults. The Young Warriors program at Mad Max's Academy was built around exactly that tension.

This is a kids martial arts program in Columbus run by Max Metzgar, an active, undefeated professional MMA fighter with a 6-0 record and a 13-fight win streak. That matters for your child for a specific reason: the technique they learn is real. It's not a watered-down version invented for kids. It's the same fundamentals Max uses professionally, scaled to a child's body, a child's attention span, and a child's need to feel safe. Your kid learns stance, footwork, balance, how to fall without getting hurt, and, as they grow, how to create space and protect themselves if someone tries to grab or push them.

Safety is the first conversation, not an afterthought. Contact is handled by age. Ages five through seven do fundamentals, coordination, and confidence games with zero contact. Ages eight through ten add light, supervised pad work and partner drills with full protective gear, and contact is always optional. Ages eleven through fourteen can opt into controlled, heavily supervised technical sparring, never hard, never unsupervised, and never required. Your child is never put in a situation they didn't agree to, and you are never asked to just trust that it's fine. You stay. You watch.

The anti-bullying angle is real, but it's handled honestly. We don't scare your child and we don't scare you. What we do is give your kid the physical confidence that makes them a harder target and the verbal confidence that lets them handle a situation before it becomes one. A child who knows they can handle themselves rarely has to. That's the goal, and it's the one that actually changes how they walk through the world.

The discipline piece is the part most parents notice first. Martial arts builds the habit of showing up, listening to a coach, and finishing what you start. It transfers to school, to chores, to the way your kid carries themselves at home. And because the program is run by someone who lives that discipline professionally, not someone who read about it in a certification course, the standard in the room is real, and kids feel the difference.

It starts with a free No Sweat Orientation, then a free trial class on the next visit. You stay for the whole thing. Your child decides at the end whether they want to come back, and you decide whether you want them to. There's no pressure on either of you. Book the orientation, come watch, and let your kid tell you what they think.

Started the program with zero mma experience - Max met me where I was at, helped me build my fundamentals, and kept me at a pace where I felt involved but not overwhelmed. Overall excellent coaching across all levels, with attention to detail and solid technique as the focal point, in addition to a supportive and encouraging community. Highly recommend

Max is a wonderful personal trainer! He's a great listener when it comes to your goals and an encouraging presence in the gym. The atmosphere is fun and nonjudgmental while still focused and engaging enough to see results. 10/10 would recommend!

I worked with Max to put together a private birthday boxing event for my boyfriend and his friends, and it was an absolute hit! Max guided everyone through a variety of punches and combinations, keeping the energy high and the vibe fun throughout. He wrapped up the session with some friendly sparring, which everyone loved. Max made the whole experience easy to plan and incredibly enjoyable from start to finish. I'd highly recommend him for your next private event

Questions parents ask

What age can my child start martial arts?

Kids can start at age 5. Classes are grouped by age, from 5 to 7, 8 to 10, and 11 to 14, so every child trains with kids their own size and maturity.

Will my child get hurt?

Safety comes first. Ages 5 to 7 train with no contact at all. Ages 8 to 10 use pads and light, supervised partner drills in full gear. Older kids can choose technical sparring, and it is never required.

Will martial arts make my child more aggressive?

The opposite. Kids learn control, respect, and how to calm a situation down. Confident kids have less reason to fight, and they are less likely to be picked on.

Can parents watch the class?

Yes. You stay for the orientation and the free trial class and see exactly how it runs. Nothing happens behind a closed door.

What should my child wear to the first class?

Comfortable athletic clothes and a water bottle. No gear or uniform is needed for the orientation or the free trial class.

Where are kids martial arts classes held?

At the Mad Max's Academy MMA Team gym, 6772 Kilowatt Cir, Blacklick, OH 43004. Families come from Gahanna, Reynoldsburg, New Albany, Pickerington, and across Columbus.
